Optimal Mass Distribution for Passivity-Based Bipedal Robots

چکیده
This paper reports how and to what extent the mass distribution of a passive dynamic walker can be tuned to maximize walking speed and stability. An exploration of the complete parameter space of a bipedal walker is performed by numerical optimization, and optimal manifolds are found in terms of speed, the form of which can be explained by a physical analysis of step periods. Stability, quantified by the minimal basin of attraction, is also shown to be high along these manifolds, but with a maximum at only moderate speeds. Furthermore, it is examined how speed and stability change on different ground slopes. The observed dependence of the stability measure on the slope is consistent with the interpretation of the walking cycle as a feedback loop, which also provides an explanation for the destabilization of the gait at higher slopes. Regarding speed, an unexpected decrease at higher slopes is observed. This effect reveals another important feature of passive dynamic walking, a swing-back phase of the swing leg near the end of a step, which decreases walking speed on the one hand, but seems to be crucial for the stability of the gait on the other hand. In conclusion, maximal robustness and highest walking speed are shown to be partly conflicting objectives

Optimal Foot Trajectory Planning of Bipedal Robots Based on a Measure of Falling
This paper presents a falling‐based optimal foot trajectory planning method (FOFTP) for the effective walking of bipedal robots in three‐dimensional space. Our primary concern is to determine the optimal footstep location for the more balanced walking of bipedal robots based on a measure of falling. A proper strategy for the intermediate trajectory of the swing foot is als...

This paper builds off of recent work on rapidly exponentially stabilizing control Lyapunov functions (RES-CLF) and control Lyapunov function based quadratic programs (CLFQP) for underactuated hybrid systems. The primary contribution of this paper is developing a robust control technique for underactuated hybrid systems with application to bipedal walking, that is able to track desired trajector...
متن کاملReduction-based Control of Three-dimensional Bipedal Walking Robots
This paper develops the concept of reduction-based control, which is founded on a controlled form of geometric reduction known as functional Routhian reduction. We prove a geometric property of general serial-chain robots termed recursive cyclicity, identifying the inherent robot symmetries that we exploit with the Subrobot Theorem. This shows that any serial-chain robot can be decomposed for a...
متن کاملReinforcement Learning Inspired Disturbance Rejection and Nao Bipedal Locomotion
Competitive bipedal soccer playing robots need to move fast and react quickly to changes in direction while staying upright. This paper describes the application of reinforcement learning to stabilise a flat-footed humanoid robot. An optimal control policy is learned using a physics simulator. The learned policy is supported theoretically and interpreted on a real robot as a linearised continuo...
متن کاملExciting passive dynamics in a versatile bipedal robot
Dynamic bipedal robots, which are capable of versatile behaviour, are rare. Most bipedal robots are either versatile and static or dynamic and limited to specific gaits. Over the last twenty years the bio-inspired spring mass model became a versatile template for bipedal walking and running gaits with many studies motivated by its high potential for versatile robot locomotion. However the chara...
